This study seeks to read Derrida’s Specters of Marx (1993) and Dickens’s A Christmas Carol (1843) together. To this end, it proceeds by focusing on disjointed time and spectrality, while attending to what emerges in common across the two texts. The first section summons the omitted ghost of Dickens into Derrida’s account of a genealogy of writers on apparition in order to demonstrate how the specters of Dickens as well as those of Derrida haunt that lineage. Building on this, the second section returns to a literary-analytic methodology and explores the spectrality of elements other than the human and spectral characters such as the weather and buildings that constitute its spatio-temporal setting, as well as that of urban structure and cityscape. Through this analysis, I will demonstrate how these diverse forms of spectrality function as a “haunting power” that sustains the enduring vitality of Dickens and his novella.
