This paper explores the relation of the iconicity principle with the semantic effects of the function word added alternation constructions in English. This study investigates the three alternation constructions which can add the function words to the original constructions in English and maintain the semantic parallelism between the original and the function word(s) added constructions: the preposition added conative construction, the to-infinitive added help construction, and the infinitive to be added complement clauses. The function word added constructions are argued to be related to the semantic effects from Lakoff and Johnson(1980)’s iconicity principle ‘Closeness is the Strength of Effect’. It is argued that the semantic effects of the preposition added conative construction are the weakening of the strength of achievement caused by its ‘attempted action’ and the agent’s ‘intentionality’. The semantic effect of the to-added help construction is the weakening of strength of participation and temporal overlap, which results in the indirect participation in the assistance and no distinct temporal overlap. The possibility for the to be added alternation has to do with the notion of the possibility for finiteness of the complement clauses. The semantic effect for the infinitive to be added construction with the main verb find is the possibility for the lack in the direct experience. Hence it is argued that the function word added constructions all reflect the semantic effects from the iconicity principle.
