This study investigates how phonological contrasts are preserved in the face of variation, focusing on the three-way place contrast among the sibilants (/s ʂ ɕ /) in Mandarin Chinese. Young female speakers tend to front /ɕ /, a feature often associated with femininity. However, fronting raises its spectral mean (M1) and reduces its distance from /s/, which may jeopardize the phonological contrast and potentially trigger a restructuring of the sibilant system. In a wordlist reading task, 40 young Mandarin speakers (20F, 20M) produced sibilants before [a] and [u]. The results showed that females exhibited higher M1 for /ɕ / than male speakers in both vowel contexts. Furthermore, vowel-dependent strategies emerged. In the /a/ context, they exhibited increased M1 values for /s/, suggesting a chain-shift where both /s/ and /ɕ / are fronted. In the /u/ context, /s/-fronting was inhibited, and speakers instead compensated for the reduced spectral contrast by relying more on F2 at vowel onset. These findings highlight the dynamic nature of phonetic cue selection in preserving phonological contrasts under sociophonetic pressure. Female speakers actively adopt fronted /ɕ / variants, potentially as indexical markers of femininity. In response to the reorganization of the sibilants’ acoustic space, speakers employ a flexible and context-sensitive mechanism.
