R-suffixation is a morphophonological process in Mandarin in which a rhotic [ɹ ] is suffixed to express diminutiveness. Previous studies (Zhang, 1999, 2000; Fu, 2022) have shown that CV and CVn words are neutralized into CVɹ after r-suffixation, while CVŋ-ɹ words remain distinct with a fully nasalized vowel (CV-ɹ = CV-ɹ ≠ CṼ-ɹ ). This study carried out a comprehensive phonetic investigation of incomplete neutralization of r-suffixed forms in Beijing Mandarin. Wordlist production data were analyzed using three acoustic cues: rhyme nasalization (A1-P0), rhyme retraction (F2), and rhoticity degree (F3-F2). The results revealed that CV-ɹ and CVn-ɹ rhymes are largely neutralized in high and low vowel contexts (Ci-ɹ = Ci-ɹ ≠ Cĩ-ɹ ), but a three-way contrast was observed in the mid vowel context (Cɤ -ɹ ≠ Cəɹ ≠ Cə̃-ɹ ). In a word identification task, listeners accurately identified r-suffixed forms in the mid vowel context, whereas performance for CV-ɹ and CVn-ɹ forms in other contexts showed significant confusion. These results indicate that r-suffixation is not uniformly applied across different vowel contexts, with neutralization patterns modulated by vowel height. The voweldependent asymmetries are discussed with reference to the role of paradigm uniformity between stem and suffixed forms (Steriade, 2000).
