This study aimed to examine the effects of a 12-week rowing machine exercise program on body composition, insulin resistance, and blood lipid profiles in middle-aged obese men using a randomized controlled trial design. Twenty-two middle-aged obese men who attended a W obesity clinic exercise center in Seoul were randomly assigned to a rowing exercise group(n=11) or a treadmill exercise group(n=11), and an exercise intervention was conducted. First, a significant group×time interaction effect was observed for body composition variables. In the rowing exercise group, body fat percentage significantly decreased, while fat-free mass and skeletal muscle mass significantly increased. In contrast, no significant changes were observed in the treadmill exercise group. These results suggest that a 12-week rowing machine exercise program may contribute to improvements in body composition in middle-aged obese men. Second, significant group×time interaction effects were found for insulin resistance variables. Fasting plasma glucose and HOMA-IR significantly decreased in the rowing exercise group, whereas no significant changes were observed in the treadmill exercise group. These findings indicate that rowing machine exercise may contribute to improvements in insulin resistance. Third, regarding blood lipid profiles, significant group×time interaction effects were observed for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides. Both variables significantly decreased following the rowing exercise intervention, and post-intervention values were significantly lower in the rowing exercise group compared with the treadmill exercise group. However, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol showed only a significant main effect of time(p=.016), with no differences between exercise modalities.
