초록·키워드
This study compares and analyzes high school students’ perceptions of the Korean War (6 · 25 War) and its representation in high school Korean History textbooks based on the 2022 Revised Curriculum, examining the historical aspects of the Korean War that students consider important and the characteristics of the narratives they prefer. To this end, a survey was conducted among 282 second-year students at a general girls’ high school in Seoul, and representations of the Korean War in eight Korean History textbooks were analyzed.
The students regarded the Korean War as an important historical event but also experienced difficulties in learning about it. Among four different narratives of the Korean War, they preferred a “comprehensive” narrative encompassing human and material losses, civilian casualties, and political and social changes. Regarding controversial historical issues, they called for more extensive narratives based on diverse sources and perspectives.
The eight Korean History textbooks generally present a “comprehensive” account of the Korean War, addressing not only military activities but also civilian casualties, political and social changes, the entrenchment of national division, and changes in the international order. However, these elements are not organically interconnected within the overall course of the Korean War. Therefore, Korean War history education requires textbook narratives and teaching and learning strategies that enable students to understand the course, losses and impacts of the war in a multidimensional manner and to recognize the interrelationships among diverse historical experiences and changes.
