This study examined the determinants of generative AI usage by classifying users into three stages: non- users, free-tier users, and paid subscribers. Using data from the 16th Korea Media Panel Study (2025), a multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted with a final sample of 7,897 respondents, followed by a binary logistic regression to identify the factors distinguishing paid subscribers from free-tier users. The results showed that digital literacy was the strongest positive predictor of both free-tier use and paid subscription, while information literacy was also positively associated with both stages. In contrast, privacy concern showed opposite associations across usage stages: it was negatively associated with free-tier use but positively associated with paid subscription, emerging as the strongest correlate distinguishing free-tier users from paid subscribers. Household income was not significantly associated with free-tier use, whereas individuals in the high-income group were more likely to subscribe to paid AI services. These findings suggest that generative AI usage follows a multi-stage pattern involving both technology adoption and subscription conversion. By examining both usage stages and the transition from free-tier use to paid subscription, this study extends the traditional dichotomous approach to technology adoption research.
