Autonomous-major programs have expanded in Korean higher education, raising questions about students’ adaptation after major entry. We aimed to compare major-choice motivation and early adaptation between direct-entry and autonomous-major students in Media Software. We analyzed survey data from 66 first-year students (47 direct-entry, 19 autonomous-major) using quantitative comparisons and content analysis of open-ended responses. We found no statistically significant group differences in intrinsic or extrinsic motivation, major adaptation, major satisfaction, or specific difficulties. However, direct-entry students more often reported course and programming burdens, whereas autonomous-major students more often described gaps in foundational learning and needs for information and relational support. We suggest combining common foundational support with route-sensitive transition support for students entering the major through different routes.
