This study examined the structural relationships among maternal parenting stress, warm and controlling parenting behaviors, and socio-emotional problem behaviors among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) enrolled in inclusive education settings in China, and further tested the indirect effects of the two types of parenting behavior. Data were collected from 200 mothers of children with ASD who attended inclusive elementary schools in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China. Structural equation modeling was employed to analyze the relationships among the study variables and the indirect effects of the parenting behaviors. The results were as follows. First, maternal parenting stress was positively associated with children’s socio-emotional problem behaviors. Second, maternal parenting stress was negatively associated with warm parenting behavior and positively associated with controlling parenting behavior. Third, warm parenting behavior was negatively associated with children’s socio-emotional problem behaviors, whereas controlling parenting behavior was positively associated with these behaviors. Fourth, maternal parenting stress had significant indirect effects on children’s socio-emotional problem behaviors through both warm and controlling parenting behaviors. These findings highlight the importance of considering both maternal parenting stress and specific parenting behaviors when seeking to understand the socio-emotional adjustment of children with ASD. The findings also underscore the need to consider the sociocultural and inclusive education contexts in which families of children with ASD are situated. In addition, they suggest the importance of family-centered support that reduces parenting burden, promotes warm and supportive parent-child interactions, and encourages non-coercive approaches to behavioral guidance.
