초록·키워드
This article reconstructs two Shakespeare productions staged by students of the Keijo Higher Commercial School (KHCS) in colonial Korea: Hamlet in 1924 and Julius Caesar in 1925. Drawing on program advertisements, colonial newspapers, a surviving production photograph, school records, and the administrative traces of English professor Ishimura Yasusaburo, it situates these performances within the institutional conditions of English education under Japanese rule. The article argues that KHCS provides the earliest documented instance of sustained English-language Shakespeare performance by students on Korean soil. It also highlights the transnational dynamics of “Campus Shakespeare” in East Asia and reassesses the place of extracurricular performance in colonial-era intellectual and cultural life. At the same time, the article stresses the limits of the colonial performance archive. The surviving sources document institutional intention, public form, and student visibility far more fully than they preserve student experience or political intention.
By distinguishing between what the sources document, what they allow as reasonable inference, and what remains undetermined, the article presents the KHCS festivals as an instance of colonial modernity in which imperial pedagogy and student participation were deeply entangled without being reducible to a simple binary of collaboration and resistance.
