This study examines gender differences in the wage effects of migration to the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) among young college graduates from non-metropolitan regions in South Korea. Although migration to the SMA generally improves labor market outcomes, limited research exists on whether its returns differ by migration pathway and gender. Using the 2019 Graduate Occupational Mobility Survey, this study classifies migration into three pathways relative to a non-SMA college/non-SMA job reference group: migration to an SMA college only (Path 1), migration to an SMA job only (Path 2), and migration involving both an SMA college and SMA job (Path 3). Heckman selection models account for sample selection bias. The results show that migration pathways involving SMA college attendance (Paths 1 and 3) generate significant wage premiums for both men and women. By contrast, pure job migration (Path 2) yields a significant wage premium only for women, with no significant effect for men. These findings indicate that gender differences in migration returns are concentrated in employment-stage migration rather than education-stage migration. Overall, this study highlights the importance of considering migration pathways and gender when evaluating the labor market effects of internal migration and designing regional and youth employment policies.
