This exploratory cross-sectional study examined relationships between total laser-run time and body composition, physical fitness, respiratory muscle function, and segment-specific respiratory and metabolic responses in 13 national team modern pentathlon athletes. Thirteen national team athletes (6 men and 7 women) participated in the study. Body composition, muscular strength, muscular endurance, power, agility, flexibility, balance, speed, cardiorespiratory endurance, and respiratory muscle function were assessed. In addition, participants completed a laser-run simulation, during which total performance time was recorded and respiratory and metabolic variables were measured using a wireless portable gas analyzer across five running and four shooting segments. Pearson correlations were calculated for the pooled sample using a significance threshold of .05 without adjustment for multiple testing. Height, body weight, body fat percentage, and fat-free mass were not significantly correlated with laser-run performance time. Among the respiratory and metabolic variables, minute ventilation (VE) was significantly and negatively correlated with laser-run performance time during the first and third running segments, oxygen uptake (VO2) during the fourth shooting segment, and carbon dioxide output (VCO2) during the first running and third and fourth shooting segments (respectively, p<.05). The ventilatory equivalent for oxygen (VE/VO2) during the first running segment and the VE/VCO2 during the second running segment were also significantly and negatively correlated with laser-run performance time (respectively, p<.05). Among the physical fitness and respiratory muscle function variables, right-hand grip strength, shuttle-run performance, and inspiratory volume were significantly and negatively correlated with laser-run performance time (respectively, p<.05), whereas sit-and-reach and trunk extension were significantly and positively correlated with performance time. In conclusion, this study identified exploratory associations between total laser-run time and right-hand grip strength, shuttle-run performance, inspiratory volume, and respiratory and metabolic variables in certain race segments among national team modern pentathlon athletes. These findings may provide preliminary data for understanding laser-run performance characteristics in national team athletes and identifying variables for further investigation.
