This study examined the structural relationships and statistical indirect effects among growth mindset, communication competence, basic psychological need satisfaction, and dropout intention among collegiate athletes. Using purposive sampling, data were collected from 212 athletes affiliated with athletic teams at two universities in Gyeonggi Province and one university in Gangwon Province. Structural equation modeling was conducted to test the proposed hypotheses. The conclusions were as follows. First, growth mindset was significantly and positively related to communication competence. Second, growth mindset was significantly and positively related to basic psychological need satisfaction. Third, communication competence was significantly and positively related to basic psychological need satisfaction. Fourth, the direct path from communication competence to dropout intention was negative but not statistically significant. Fifth, basic psychological need satisfaction was significantly and negatively related to dropout intention. Sixth, the specific indirect effect of growth mindset on dropout intention through basic psychological need satisfaction was statistically significant. Seventh, the specific indirect effect of communication competence on dropout intention through basic psychological need satisfaction was statistically significant. Eighth, the specific indirect effect of growth mindset on basic psychological need satisfaction through communication competence was statistically significant. Ninth, the specific sequential indirect effect of growth mindset on dropout intention through communication competence and basic psychological need satisfaction was statistically significant.
