The hotel industry has increasingly shifted from a lodging-centered service structure toward delivering differentiated customer experiences through food and beverage (F&B) services. Hotel F&B products serve as important brand touchpoints, while product names function as linguistic cues that shape consumer evaluations. However, limited empirical research has examined how phonetic characteristics in F&B product names influence consumer responses and purchase-related behaviors. This study investigated the effects of phonetic characteristics in F&B product names on emotional responses, perceived taste, and purchase intention. Based on phonetic symbolism theory, the study examined plosive and non-plosive sounds as linguistic cues. Data were collected from consumers with experience using hotel F&B services, yielding 280 valid responses. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS 29.0, including frequency analysis, reliability analysis, independent-samples t-tests, and regression analyses. The findings showed that phonetic characteristics significantly influenced emotional responses and produced significant differences in perceived taste. Emotional responses positively influenced perceived taste and purchase intention, while perceived taste also had a significant positive effect on purchase intention. These results suggest that the sounds used in F&B product names may shape consumers’ emotional associations and taste expectations, thereby influencing purchase intention. This study extends phonetic symbolism research to the hotel F&B context and provides empirical insights into consumer responses to product naming. From a managerial perspective, the findings highlight the importance of considering sound symbolism, emotional associations, and anticipated taste when developing naming strategies. Carefully designed product names may serve as strategic communication tools for shaping consumer expectations and enhancing the marketing effectiveness of hotel F&B products. Future research could examine how specific phonetic features interact with product categories, brand positioning, and consumer characteristics to influence evaluations and behavioral intentions.
