Background: Flower stalk removal is recommended during cultivation of Rehmannia glutinosa; however, its effects on rhizome yield of the Korean cultivar “Togang” remain unclear. This study evaluated the effects of flower stalk removal frequency on re-bolting, growth, rhizome yield, and economic returns.
Methods and Results: Field experiments involving no flower stalk removal as well as treatments with one to four removal sessions were conducted in 2024 and 2025. Re-bolting occurred after flower stalk removal, with repeated removal reducing the bolting rate during the late growth stage. In 2025, the final bolting rate of the treatment with four flower stalk removal sessions was the lowest (4.8%). However, repeated flower stalk removal did not significantly increase the marketable or total rhizome yields. Two-way analysis of variance of the two-year yield data showed significant year effects; conversely, those of the flower stalk removal frequency and year × removal frequency interaction were not significant. Economic benefits did not consistently increase with increasing flower stalk removal frequency, as labor costs increased with repeated removal. In the farm validation trial, the marketable and total rhizome yields did not significantly differ among the treatments with no flower stalk removal, one removal session, and conventional removal.
Conclusions: Repeated flower stalk removal reduced late-season bolting; however, it did not improve the marketable or total rhizome yield in R. glutinosa “Togang.” Therefore, minimizing or omitting flower stalk removal may reduce labor and production costs without adversely affecting rhizome productivity.
