Purpose : Regional traditional martial arts embody locally situated technical knowledge, cultural memory, and social relationships. Their continuity, however, is increasingly challenged by aging tradition bearers, limited recruitment, and changing opportunities for practice. This article examines Xuchang Dongjie Wushu to explore how a regional martial arts tradition has adapted its transmission practices to contemporary social conditions.
Methods : The study draws on six field visits conducted across Xuchang, Chongqing, and Chengdu between October 2022 and January 2024, 16 interviews with 11 participants, and documentary materials.
Results : The analysis identifies four areas of practice: cultural documentation, open instruction, engagement with formal education, and community organization. The case illustrates how publications and audiovisual records can support knowledge preservation, how broader access to instruction can extend participation, and how educational and organizational connections can create additional opportunities for continuity. These practices suggest several directions for regional martial arts safeguarding, including more inclusive transmission, sustained organizational support, cooperation with educational institutions, and stronger engagement with local communities.
Conclusion : Their relevance nevertheless depends on local resources and institutional conditions. As an exploratory case study, the article identifies practical considerations rather than establishing the long-term effectiveness or general applicability of a transmission model.
