This study investigated sediment grain size, organic matter, trace metal concentrations, and contamination levels in surface sediments from seaweed farming areas in the Jindo–Haenam region on the southwestern coast of Korea. Surface sediments were collected from 14 stations and analyzed for grain-size composition, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), C/N ratio, and trace metals including As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Pb, and Zn, together with Li for grain-size correction. Sediments were predominantly muddy, with mud contents ranging from 12.4% to 99.7% (mean 80.1%). The concentrations of TOC and TN ranged from 2.5 to 9.0 mg/g and from 0.3 to 1.1 mg/g, respectively. The concentrations of Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Zn, and Li were significantly positively correlated with mud content (r=0.786–0.878, P≤0.001), whereas TOC and TN were not significantly correlated with mud content, indicating different controls on metal and organic-matter distributions. Based on the threshold effects level (TEL), pollution load index, and ecological risk index, overall trace metal contamination and ecological risk were low, although Li-corrected Zn exceeded the TEL at one station. These results provide a spatial baseline for sediment quality management in seaweed farming areas.
