RanGAPs (RanGTPase activator protein) trigger the hydrolysis of GTP bound to the small GTPase, Ran, and regulate active nucleocytoplasmic transport in eukaryotic cells. Deletion of any component of the Ran system (i.e., Ran, its nucleotide exchange factor, the RanGEF, or RanGAP) disrupts nucleocytoplasmic transport and results in cell death. In most eukaryotes, including model fungal, animal, and plant organisms, Ran and its regulators are well-conserved. However, no RanGAP ortholog has been identified bioinformatically in the most Alveolates, including dinoflagellates and apicomplexan parasites, suggesting that Ran is activated using an entirely different protein in these divergent organisms.
