Science festivals play a pivotal role in fostering a love for STEM disciplines, offering engaging activities to make the subject both enjoyable and accessible. However, the vibrant atmosphere of traditional science festivals, characterized by bright lights, loud noise, and crowded venues, poses challenges for sensory-sensitive individuals. In recognition of this, we have created Sensational SciFest; an event prioritizing the needs of neurodiverse children and their loved ones. Our festival integrated practical science demonstrations, science art, and interactive play; alongside support stations, a sensory room, and a calming center, providing an inclusive space for all participants. This was developed in collaboration with our partners at AMRoC Fab Lab as part of their annual “Roboticon”. Central to our event was the comprehensive training provided by The Center for Autism & Related Disabilities at the University of South Florida. All volunteers and science demonstrators underwent specialized training to prepare them for the potential range of sensory needs of neurodiverse individuals. Our commitment to inclusion in our local community extended to the sources of funding, which included an Amgen competition for Tampa Bay nonprofits, and through the an Accelerator grant from the Science Festival Alliance; emphasizing its significance in reaching out to new and more diverse audiences. Sensational SciFest not only accommodates the needs of neurodiverse individuals but also provides a unique platform for scientists to refine their communication skills according to diverse sensory requirements. This is something that was positively reflected in the feedback from our attendees. In essence, our Sensational SciFest represents a significant step towards making STEM activities accessible and enjoyable for everyone, fostering a more inclusive and diverse scientific community. Funding was obtained from the Amgen Foundation, and the Science Festival Alliance's Accelerator program.
