The inflammatory response of macrophages (MF) depends on tight transcriptional regulation to ensure proper activation, resolution, and adaptation to diverse tissue environments. While transcriptional activation is well-characterized, the role of active transcriptional repression and bookmarking in controlling macrophage identity, heterogeneity, and function is less understood. Here, we identify BACH1, a heme-regulated transcriptional repressor, as a bimodal critical epigenomic safeguard in macrophages.
