According to data from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa infected about 32,600 people in 2017-killing 2,700. A major concern for cystic fibrosis patients who often contract P. aeruginosa infections, this bacterium is also capable of infecting livestock, harming plants, and biofouling reactors. Studies investigating gene expression demonstrated that a cytochrome P450 (CYP168A1) was activated in pathogenic strains. Later work demonstrated that CYP168A1 can metabolize fatty acids, but its function in Pseudomonas remains ambiguous.
