Drosophila melanogaster is widely regarded as one of the most advantageous model organisms across multiple biochemical disciples including genetics, genomics, and developmental biology. D. melanogaster, like many organisms, differentiate sex based on a gene-rich X chromosome, and a gene-poor Y chromosome. To correct for this imbalance, male flies transcribe the X chromosome at roughly double the rate of female flies in a process known as dosage compensation. Dosage compensation requires the localization of a ribonucleoprotein complex called the Male-Specific Lethal (MSL) complex to the X chromosome.
