Lipases are used as biocatalysts for a variety of bioprocessing industries; however, there is still a need for new generations of these enzymes with more favorable characteristics such as improved activity and stability. Protein engineering has been shown to be one of the most effective techniques in recent industrial enzyme studies to fulfill this. Using directed evolution combined with semi-rational design approach of protein engineering, our group have previously isolated variants of a metagenome-derived lipase with enhanced catalytic activities (Biochem Eng J, 154: 107442, 2020).
