Translation is the process by which proteins are synthesized from RNA in the ribosome and represents a key step in gene expression. Translation initiation is the rate limiting and most regulated step of translation. Misregulation of translation can lead to cancers, viral infections, and other diseases. mRNA recruitment, during which a portion of the ribosome attaches to mRNA, scans to locate the start codon, and halts to assemble the full ribosome upon identification of the start codon, represents a key step during initiation.
