Phage therapy is an emerging strategy for treating bacterial infections. It uses bacterial viruses, or phages, to specifically target harmful bacteria while leaving others unaffected due to their host specificity. The overuse of antibiotics has contributed to the rise of antibiotic-resistant strains, posing significant challenges to public health. It has also led to unintended consequences, like microbiome disruptions that increase risks for allergies and immune issues. Phage therapy is gaining traction as a complementary approach to antibiotic therapy, especially for multidrug-resistant pathogens like the ESKAPE group (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species), which are notorious for their ability to evade antibiotics.
