NADPH is a major reducing currency that acts as an electron reservoir to drive the biosynthesis of macromolecules such as amino acids, nucleotides, and fatty acids. It is also critical for generating antioxidants like glutathione (GSH), which detoxify reactive oxygen species (ROS) and maintain cellular redox homeostasis. Cells maintain NADPH pools in various subcellular compartments, including the cytosol and mitochondria. Research from the Hoxhaj lab has significantly furthered our knowledge of how the subcellular localization of NADPH pools dictate their specific function during cell proliferation.
