Mitotic kinesins play a critical role in guiding bipolar spindles during mitosis. Kinesin-5, a mitotic kinesin, has been an anticancer drug target due to its vital role during mitosis in controlling microspindle formation resulting in the separation of chromosomes and centromeres. Several molecules were discovered to inhibit Kinesin-5 but have led to no clinical success. Recent studies have shown that other mitotic proteins play a role in regulating Kinesin-5 and not much is known from these kinesins and their possible inhibitors.
