The Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow Laboratory (HeatLab) at Brno University of Technology has been conducting research for over than 30 years on various industrial processes, focusing on continuous casting and downstream processes critical for metal production. This paper describes the experimental methodologies and devices developed by HeatLab to simulate real plant processes in laboratory conditions, including secondary cooling in continuous casting, innovations in hydraulic descaling, optimization of cooling strategies for work rolls, and adjusted cooling regimes to enhance the mechanical properties of final products. The research has provided significant insights into thermal management and control, leading to improved efficiency and quality in the steel industry.
