최근 SSD의 성능이 향상됨에 따라 SATA interface를 대체하는 고 대역폭 인터페이스로 PCIe의 사용이 증대되고 있다. SATA system에서는 host controller가 bridge의 역할을 하기 때문에 storage와는 별도로 존재한다. 이와는 다르게 PCIe를 host interface로 직접 사용하는 SSD는 host controller를 내장하는 구성이 효율적이다. 이러한 구성에서 PCIe의 고 대역폭을 사용하기 위해서는 SSD와 host system의 interrupt overhead를 줄여주는 command queueing 알고리즘과 DMA제어기가 필요하다. 특히 SSD와 host가 독립된 buffer management와 주소체계를 가지는 것을 고려해 볼 때 3D 주소 영역에 대한 데이터 전송이 가능한 SGDMA가 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 저비용, 고성능 multiple request/completion command queueing 메커니즘과 SGDMA를 내장한 PCIe 기반의 SSD host controller 제안한다. 본 host controller는 read/write 각각 635MB/s, 480MB/s 이상의 속도를 제공하며 한 번의 host interrupt로 최대 32개의 host command를 완료 할 수 있다.
