The imbalance between imports and exports in global trades causes various costs that are related to repositioning empty containers among ports in the maritime transportation. In this study, the shipping company procures the standard or foldable containers by purchasing and leasing. The empty container repositioning problems are considered for both shipping and leasing companies. We have developed mathematical programming models to manage the standard and foldable container operations considering the purchasing, leasing, and empty container repositioning. The contracted lease pricing policy between the shipping and leasing is also proposed to reduce the mutual overall costs. Numerical experiments shows that the introduction of foldable containers can significantly reduce the overall costs of the shipping company and proposed lease pricing policy can lead to the win-win scenarios for both shipping and leasing companies.
