North and South Korea are the only divided country in the world, which are still hostile to each other. The division has caused unbalanced economic growth, political and social distortion. Also, North Korean defectors and South Korean are indifferent and prejudiced towards each other.
The aim of this article is to remind the importance of two divided Koreas'' social intergration and human interaction by taking a close look at the life of 4 people who experienced South-North Korean couples’s marriage life through the oral life history approach. As a result, the study found several features among inter-Korean couples.
First of all, although common features such as love, homogeneity, complementarity, and financial status also affect their partner selection, heterogeneity gives a positive influence in their relationship as they put extra affect to complement each other to overcome fundamental differences. The study also found that North Korean defectors have a tendency to be proud of getting married to South Korean. In case of South Korean who are married to North Korean defectors, in general, they have open-minded characteristics or possess similar religion of life values with their North Korean partner.
Second, inter-Korean couples have special tensions as well as common factors that other normal couples have, such as a lack of affection or conversation. For examples, defectors feel fundamentally lonely and are in a situation where they can''t go home. They get an important social base by getting married to South Korea, but even after marriage, they have a trouble raising differences in gender role expentations, language habits, and insufficient information on their un familial cultures. But according to the study, these kinds of conflict can be overcome by conversation. At first, inter-Korean couples have difficulties due to social and cultural differences, but as time goes by, the efforts to overcome differences positively affect their relationship as it makes them more open-minded and considerate.
In addition to individual perspectives, South-North Korean marriage also has big social implications. First of all, inter-marriage is a combination of one of the most heterogeneous backgrounds. Nevertheless, the couples consider it as their fate and try to narrow down differences. In this sense, inter-Korean couples can be hope of integrating two divided Koreas. Secondly, the inter-Korean couples give a hint of problems in advance that may occur in the process of the unification. Also, these couples can be guideline to the future inter-Korean couples. Although there were many limitations when performing this study, it is to be hoped that the study contributes to social intergration and increases interestes in the South-Noreh Korean relationship.
