이 연구의 목적은 같은 학년 내에서 출생 월에 따라 초등학생의 건강 체력에 차이가 존재하는지 학생건강체력평가(PAPS) 측정결과를 통해 알아보고 그 결과를 토대로 학교 현장에서 활용될 수 있는 기초자료를 제공하는데 있다.
이러한 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해 서울시에 있는 2개 초등학교 5, 6학년 학생들 711명의 학생건강체력평가(PAPS)결과를 대상으로 양적연구를 실시하였으며, 자료의 수집과 활용을 함에 있어 연구 윤리를 지키기 위해 노력하였다.
본 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 입학월령에 따른 건강 체력의 차이는 어떠한가?
5학년의 경우 월령이 높을수록 심폐지구력의 점수가 높았으며 6학년의 경우 월령이 높은 아동이 월령이 낮은 아동에 비해 근력의 점수가 높았다. 5, 6학년 남자, 여자 전체 아동을 대상으로 한 경우 월령이 높을수록 근력의 점수가 높았다.
둘째, 종목별 아동의 출생월별 분포는 어떠한가?
건강체력 요소별 점수의 상위(25%)에 어느 생월에 태어난 어린이들이 많은지에 대한 분석의 경우 유연성을 제외한 심폐지구력, 근력, 순발력, BMI는 3-6월생 이 그 외 생월에 속하는 집단보다 더 높게 나타난 것을 볼 수 있었으나 통계적으로 유의하지는 않았다.

이러한 결과를 바탕으로 연구자가 내린 결론은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 월령이 높은 어린이, 즉 같은 학년에서 먼저 태어난 어린이의 경우 월령이 낮은 어린이에 비해 유연성을 제외하고 심폐지구력, 근력, 순발력, BMI 의 항목에서 전반적으로 점수가 높은 것을 확인할 수가 있었다. 몇 달 먼저 태어난 어린이들이 그렇지 않은 어린이에 비해 상위 그룹에 속하는 누적적 이득의 효과가 존재하는 것이다.
둘째, 같은 학년 아동들 사이에 존재하는 월령에 따른 건강체력의 차이로 인해 평가나 선발에 있어 불리한 상황에 놓일 수 있게 되는 아동들의 특성을 생각했을 때 월령에 따른 차별화된 학습방법이나 지도 방안, 운동처방 등에 대한 앞으로의 연구가 필요하겠다.
