The aim of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) on dentin and microleakage of bulk-fill resin composites (RCs).
One high viscosity bulk-fill RCs (Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill; TBF) and two low-viscosity bulk-fill RCs (Venus bulk fill; VB, sureFil SDR flow; SDR) were compared with one conventional RCs (Filtek Z350; FZ).
In order to evaluate the SBS values, 40 permanent molars were selected and divided into 4 groups randomly (n=10). The bulk-fill RCs (TBF, VB, SDR) were applied in 4 mm thickness, whereas the conventional RCs (FZ) was applied in 2 mm thickness.
The mean SBS values were 21.91 MPa for SDR, 21.16 MPa for FZ, 15.80 MPa for VB and 11.11 MPa for TBF. The mean SBS value of FZ was no statistically significant difference when compared with those of SDR and VB. However, the mean SBS value of TBF was significantly lower than that of FZ(P<0.05).
In SDR and FZ, mixed failure and cohesive failure were predominantly observed, whereas adhesive failure was mainly observed in VB and TBF.
In order to evaluate the microleakage, class I cavities(5 mm x 2 mm x 4 mm) were prepared in 32 permanent molars. The teeth were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=8) and restored with resin composites in one 4 mm increment for the bulk-fill RCs and two horizontal increments of 2 mm for the conventional RCs. There were no statistically significant differences in microleakage between the groups. However, all groups showed statistically significant differences depending on aging procedure.
In respect of SBS and microleakage, the use of low-viscosity bulk-fill RCs might be helpful for the clinicians by simplifying the procedure.
