This study aims to examine the aspects of translation related to colons, dashes, and semicolons. In English and perhaps less so in Korean, punctuation consists of symbols which, when used in sentences with letters, is an indispensable element ensuring logical and smooth communication. Even though it’s a linguistic substance, korean writers underestimate and poorly recognize its important role in sentences.
In particular, as for colons, dashes, and semicolons are used quite differently in English and Korean. Those three kinds of punctuation are used to help effectively clarify the structure and meaning of sentences. Another big difference between them is from the translation obviously.
Chapter Ⅰ describes the necessity of punctuation and the way of studying it. Recognizing punctuation as a necessary element, one source text and three target texts are selected to investigate the detailed aspects of the translation.
Chapter Ⅱ looks into the concepts, the function, and the roles of the punctuation such as colons, dashes, and semicolons in sentences. It also refers to compare the differences of the use between English and Korean colons, dashes, and semicolons.
Chapter Ⅲ analyzes the aspects of translation between the source text and the target texts in reality. This section’s goal is to study the strategies used when translating from English to Korean; whether it is properly translated; if not, in what way it should be corrected; and how well the relations between punctuation and feelings in the source text are conveyed when translated.
Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse is full of various punctuation and poetic expressions for which it is hard to capture the influence of punctuation on the connotative meaning. Because too much focus on punctuation makes the hidden meanings weak, too much concentration on poetic feelings makes the original reason for using punctuation forgotten.
Punctuation is a device to clarify the words, clauses, and sentences and to convey the ideas, feelings, and meanings effectively. Without proper punctuation, it is possible to misjudge sentences from the source text and get on the wrong track. This can reduce the readability or confuse the readers.
