A Study on the Digital Narrative of Webtoon Fan Translation and the Reader-Response
Korean Webtoon has its own digital narrative features. Webtoons are different from digital comics, web mangas and internet comics. Webtoon has gained its original genre characteristics through the remediation of self-reflective writings in digital era. However, the official translation of Korean Webtoon has changed Webtoons into simple digital comics.
Meanwhile, the rapid influx of new digital media technologies and platforms has made it possible for fans of various cultural texts to easily create and distribute their own secondary cultural works. A group of tech-savvy, Korean language proficient fans from different backgrounds have converged to form a "transnational fan community"(Blakley and Kaplan, 2009: 37) for the Korean Webtoon Tower of God. These fans have generated timely, efficient and emotionally appealing translations that have been circulated among members of the community.
The purpose of the study is: i) to observe and analyze the online reader-response of fan translations and official translations of the Webtoon Tower of God and ii) to suggest that Webtoon translation should transfer the digital interactivity of Korean Webtoon. To achieve the object of the study, the researcher examined the Korean-English fan translations and online fandom of Tower of God to understand what functions the translations served for fans and what was at stake in fan interactions for these communities. Also the researcher used “Internet Ethnography” as a research method in order to analyze the online discussion regarding Webtoon translation.
In particular, the study compared the established translations offered by Line Webtoon, the official distributor of Tower of God, with the amateur fan translations. The research into various message board posts within the fan community showed that former Webtoon fan translations transferred Webtoon’s digital narrative features, and suggested that the fans overwhelmingly preferred the fan translations offering Korean Webtoon’s digital interactivity. The study focused on the interpretative power of fans in generating fan translations with relevant meanings to the individual fan and the community in which the texts circulate.
