The purpose of this study is to investigate the acceptance pattern of poppin dance in Korea, as it has been introduced and developed in Korea, by applying the acculturation theory. To accomplish this goal, we analyzed three stages of culture acceptance process, propagation / presentation phase, selection / acceptance phase, and resistance / reconstruction phase, which are applied to Korean influx and development process of street dance. In addition, we analyzed the acceptance pattern at each stage by the categorizing into acceptance base, factors for cultural acceptance, direction for cultural acceptance, attitude for cultural acceptance, and acceptance of culture. The specific study result can be summarized as follows.
First, the following is the result of analyzing the introduction and development of poppin dance in Korea. As the result, the acceptance patterns of poppin dance in Korea can be classified into three stages: presentation and propagation, acceptance and selection, and resistance and reconstruction. There were differences between the acceptance patterns of each stage.
Second, the following is the analysis result of acculturation phenomenon in the acceptance patterns of poppin dance in Korea. As the result, it was confirmed that the pop dance, which is an American culture, was influenced by the following: acceptance base, factors of cultural acceptance, direction of cultural acceptance, attitude of cultural acceptance, and contents of cultural acceptance. There were two acculturation phenomenon observed from these influences.
The poppin dance, a representative dance culture of America, was introduced in Korea, and it has been gaining much attention. It was analyzed that the phenomenon was settled as a new culture of Korea by going through various stages of cultural phenomenon, rather than taking place as a temporary trend. In such process, the direct exchange to accommodate culture played a decisive role. It is analyzed that the institutional basis of education also played a very important role in terms of how to convey the culture.
