Although ginseng is the representative medicinal crop in Korea, there is a growing concern about the collapse of the ginseng industry due to the continuous deterioration of production conditions. In order to overcome this situation, ginseng farmers are considering expanding direct seeding cultivation which can reduce labor force and production cost to secure competitiveness. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the management characteristics of ginseng farmers and to suggest the implications for activation of direct seeding cultivation by analyzing factors influencing selection of the transplanting and direct seeding cultivation. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the ginseng farmers in Korea and to analyze the determinants of the selection of the cultivation method using the binary logit model. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the younger the management age, the lower the level of cultivation technology, the less the korea certification agrifood area, and the smaller the total cultivation area, the higher the probability of choosing direct seeding cultivation. Also, the higher the income rate, the higher the probability of choosing direct seed cultivation. Based on the results of these analyzes, we proposed activation plan of direct seeding cultivation for securing competitiveness of ginseng farmers through cultivation technology development, improvement of distribution structure, and support for new farmers.
