The continuous success of male-centered films in Korean cinema over the past few years is a striking phenomenon. In particular, buddy films ? a film genre that depicts the friendship and homosocial bonding of two leading male characters ? are rapidly increasing. In these films, women are depicted only as peripheral characters, and oftentimes, are excluded from the narrative. Surprisingly, these films garner a positive response from women fans despite the male-dominated and misogynistic narratives that are employed.
Women have traditionally been the leading consumers of cultural products of various industries ranging from television, radio, theatre, concerts, publishing, and exhibitions. However, women’s consumption of male-centered films seems to be more complicated, especially considering the social changes occurring in South Korea including the reexamination of female subjectivity and the increasing feminist movements among younger generations. Indeed, this cultural phenomenon seems to go against these recent trends.
How does the Korean film industry attract female audiences to watch male-centered films then? This study answers this question by analyzing the changing representation of masculinity in Korean buddy films from the 1990s to the 2010s. Genre is formed as a result of accumulated interaction between the audience and the studio, and thus it not only reflects the cultural context of a society but it also has a socializing effect on the audience. Particularly, the buddy film is a genre where the crisis of masculinity that revolves around class, race, gender, and social norms is negotiated through narrative resolution involving the reconciliation between two male leads. As such, it is an appropriate text to contemplate discourses of masculinity and gender. This study first categorizes buddy films in terms of plot, characters, and conventions by analyzing popular Korean buddy films from the past 30 years. Based on this categorization, the representation of hegemonic masculinity in each category is analyzed. Also, secondary resources such as relevant literature, news articles, media criticism, and online posts are examined in order to understand the social discourse concerning buddy films.
First, the categorization of Korean buddy films has shown that earlier buddy films (released during the 1990s to early 2000s) consist of works that directly borrow the narrative structure and conventions of foreign films. These include outlaw buddy films and cop/detective buddy films, which are heavily influenced by Hollywood, as well as noir buddy films, heavily influenced by Hong Kong. After the mid-2000s, however, the buddy film genre not only increased in quantity but became localized in Korea. As a result, various localized buddy films emerged, such as those that integrate historical elements such as the division of Korea, those combined with period dramas, or buddy films that depict the world of Korean gangsters. Afterwards, in the 2010s, these genres became hybridized into various ‘Koreanized’ genres and became widely popular. Some examples include: buddy films that depict a North Korean spy and a South Korean policeman; period drama buddy films that involve detectives; and buddy films that show public authority figures such as police and prosecutors operating in collusion with criminals.
Indeed, popular Korean buddy films have changed along with the current of the times. What is particularly interesting is that the masculinity represented by male leads have changed from an exaggerated, strong masculinity to a more hybrid masculinity that encapsulates both strength and softness. Since the 2000s, buddy films began to feature more male characters with a soft, refined, and cosmopolitan look; these characters were represented as being more feminine or as lacking. According to past studies, these new male images have twofold results. On the one hand, they fulfill the romantic fantasies of female audiences, thus contributing to the construction of women as agents of sexual desire. On the other hand, the friendlier and less threatening representations of men conceal the reproduction of traditional notions such as the male dominance in power relations and heteronormativity.
Buddy films have traditionally employed various narrative devices to deny the possibility of homosexual interpretations of male intimacy. However, in recent Korean buddy films, narrative conventions used to deny homosexuality appear much less frequently, and some films even actively employ queer codes to stimulate the sexual fantasies of female fans. The desire of females who create fictional narratives about the sexual relationship of males (such as Boy''s Love and fan fiction) has been theorized in female subculture studies, and buddy films appropriate such subcultural codes in order to appeal to female movie fandom.
Lastly, a discourse analysis of news articles, media criticisms, and online posts was conducted, showing that a ‘bromance’ discourse is spread through the media. The film industry uses bromance codes as a business strategy to attract women to the theaters. For example, film promotions utilize phrases and slogans with a homosexual nuance, as well as create videos that emphasize the affection and intimacy of the actual male actors, which gives the impression that their bond in the film extends to real life. However, the bromance discourse presupposes heteronormativity and film producers still reject flagrant homosexuality, thus preserving dominant gender ideologies.
Nevertheless, this study suggests that such cultural phenomenon can potentially lead to a fissure in gender norms. The film industry has traditionally been regarded as a male-centered realm by the men, for the men. However, recent advancements in the position of female audiences and their performativity are certainly breaching through such sturdy sanctuary. As the power of female consumers in the cultural industry grew, the film industry began to carefully monitor the tastes of female audiences, which are reflected in film texts. Also, rather than accepting the meaning of film texts as intended by its original creator, female audiences poach these texts and reappropriate them as raw materials for sexual entertainment. Since this cultural phenomenon is observed only in a fraction of the movie fandom, it cannot be generalized to the entire female audience. Nevertheless, the accumulation of such practices can be seen as a challenge on heteronormativity as well as the concept of masculinity.
