This study analyzed geomorphology and Feng-shui location of five Seowons(Sosu, Oksan, Dosan, Dodong and Byeongsan) in Daegu and Gyeongbuk. The Seowons were registered as the world culture heritage for the essence of human life shown in terms of nature, human being, education, sprit, place and space. Those Seowons in this study are evaluated as good places in the perspective of mountain and water, and landscape. They are identified as being seclusive and static sites due to their locational advantage of deep valley with high green ratio. Not only are they subjected to some well positioned conditions for human development through reflection and meditation as well as academic training, but also are assumed as being suitable for longevity.
Those Seowons are not completely situated with a necessary complementarity(保局, Boguk) and core site(穴場, Hyuljang) factors, though. Some weakness through this study of the Seowons was revealed in light of the fact that Feng-shui location harmonizes with the secrets of nature and earth. The analysis shows that the locations of those Seowons have a consistent vulnerability in terms of Jangpung(藏風) rather than Duksu(得水), according to the theory of Hyungsae(形勢論). Therefore, this research suggests the ways and what to do, based on a suitable Bibo(裨補) for an elegant prestigious site. A common Bibo is to plant pine trees and form forest.
Sosu Seowon needs to install wall and make a forest by planting a low height variety of pine tree. Oksan Seowon is suggested to have pine tree Bibo to protect mountain and valley winds, and needs to prune the ginkgo trees on the north side. Dosan Seowon requires a small hill making on the northwest side of Jeonsacheong(front hall, 典祀廳), and also needs a Bibo at the end of Naemyungdang(內明堂). It is necessary for Dodong Seowon to build a Bibo forest around the northwest to northeast across the Seowon, and increase the size and density of pine tree forest at the point where the northeast Oebakho(outer right side, 外白虎) ends. Byeongsan Seowon needs to plant pine trees along the Bakho range of mountain to cover a weak wind protection, and also needs to make a creature of mountain for Kwonsae(關鎖) of Naemyungdang. Besides that, the creation of Bibi forest in front of Naemyungdang will help prevent some bad sprit(凶殺) of the Byeongsan(mountain).
With the application of Bibo treatment, the Seowons will be regenerated as an uncomparable prestigious sites since it would harmonize with the secrets of nature, earth, and human being. It is quite clear for humans to live a complete life when the flows of winds and water from the earth can be harmonized. Since the harmony and balance of nature and humans are the essence of Feng-shui, a prestigious site changes with the times and environment as well, and should be properly evaluated.
