The purpose of this study is to study Anton Chekhov''s play, The Seagull, to construct and explore the “Masha” character on the stage.
Chekhov''s language is unclear and the plot is not specific. His work is a dialogue that depicts the scene of life that escaped from the aspect of conflict. Therefore, the conflicts and dramatic actions that are revealed in the existing plays are not revealed. In order to overcome these difficulties, the researcher constructed the “Masha” character in <Seagull> using Michael Chekhov''s “psychological gestures”.
This study was based on a demonstration at Dongguk University''s M.F.A. in the Department of Performing Arts, Graduate School of Film, from March to May 2013. In Chapter 2, the work analysis and Masha''s character analysis were conducted to help the general understanding of <Seagull>, and 1) imagination and image of “Michael Chekhov”, 2) body and image of imagination, and 3) psychological gestures were introduced. In Chapter 3, 1) subtext and 2) objects are used to implement the image of the body on the actual stage. 1) The key-words of the subtext are unrequited love and escape from reality, and attempts were made through the image of imagination. 2) The object was targeted at alcohol, cigarettes, and black clothes.
The research results are summarized as follows. 1) Imagination and image affect the actor''s psychology and body. 2) It allows actors to express more clearly and concretely. 3) An actor''s own expression is possible through an image.
Through the “technic training” of “Michael Chekhov,” the researcher was able to create three-dimensional characters and express them clearly on stage. I hope this study will be helpful to not only researchers, but also actors who study acting and students who explore Michael Chekhov''s acting training methods.
