Prunus spachiana f. ascendens is a woody plant native to Korea and Japan. P. spachiana f. ascendens, which grows wild in Korea, starts blooming about 2 weeks earlier than other Prunus species, and is an ornamentally valuable plant. Seed dormancy affects the germination and seedling growth of many plant species. Botanists around the world are conducting research to classify the dormant types of seeds. As nothing is known about the seed dormancy of Prunus spachiana f. ascendens, in this study, the dormancy type and germination characteristics of Prunus spachiana f. ascendens were investigated. It was judged to have physiological dormancy through a phenolology experiment. However, since it takes a very long time to germinate in the natural state, H2SO4 treatment and GA3 treatment experiments were conducted, which can make germination in a short period of time. As a result of the experiment, the germination rate was the highest at 21.8 % in the treatment group that was treated with GA3 1000 mg?L? 1 along with 1 minute treatment with H2SO4. In the GA3 experiment, the germination rate was low when GA3 was treated for 24 hours, but it was found that it rose to 17.9 % when treated for 48 hours. However, these treatments were not effective in increasing the germination rate. The germination rate was 46.4 % when only cold stratification treatment was performed for about 12 weeks, but a high germination rate of 74.6 % was shown when certain warm stratification and cold stratification treatment were performed. Also, when the endocarp was removed and cultured, the germination rate was 69.6 %. This can be seen as a factor that inhibits the germination of the endocarp. The germination rates of 100 and 86.6 % were shown when GA3 and fluridone treatments were applied to the seeds from which the endocarp was removed. Through this experiment, it was found that germination was inhibited not only in the endocarp but also in the true seeds. Therefore, the dormancy type of the P. spachiana f. ascendens seeds could be classified as intermediate physiological dormancy among physiological dormancy types.
