The 1980’s was the golden age of contemporary Chinese poetry. Poets of this period, such as the Returned Poets who came back to poetry circles after the Cultural Revolution, the Misty Poets who officially ushered in the new era of Chinese poetry, and the Third-generation Poets whose objective was to challenge Misty Poets, testified the changes of times through their creation. The 1980’s was also a period in which China aimed for economic development through the Reform and Opening-up. That was why Chinese poetry after the 1990’s accepted the changes in reality caused by marketization and globalization and adapted to the market economy. For survival, therefore, poetry had to be chosen by readers. But it does not mean that the interest and intervention of the party and the government in poetry have disappeared. This is perhaps the reason why there is no dissertation on the canonization of Chinese poetry of the 1980’s yet. Many intricate politico-economic factors affecting readers’ reaction to poems make it hard to give a clear explanation of the canonization.
This dissertation contends that Chinese poetry of the 1980’s is still in the canonization process, since it is hard to single out poems of this period that are being canonized. That is why I raise a question with previous study that only deals with the canonization of certain poets or makes a hasty conclusion that certain poets/poems have already been canonized. In dealing with the canonization, therefore, what should be done first is to review how it was initiated, how different it was for each poet, what role critics and scholars have played, and how it has changed with the development of media. In order to review these, this dissertation, alike previous research, focus on the poems considered canons in literary histories and anthologies. At the same time, I pay attention not only to what is written in contemporary literary histories but also to what is intentionally excluded from them and try to figure out what has caused such omission. Besides checking the appearance frequency of certain poems in anthologies, I also try to find the editors’ intention and what has influenced on it to demonstrate the connection between the publication of anthologies and the matter of canonization.
Regarding the canonization of Chinese poetry in the 1980’s, the findings of this dissertation are as follows: first, the canonization of Chinese poetry during this period was driven mainly by government-sponsored poetry circles at the start, but more diverse mediators began participating as times went on. Without the support of government-sponsored poetry circles, the canonization process could not have been initiated. After the 1990’s, however, a variety of new subjects surrounding or outside government-sponsored poetry circles, including academic circles, middle and high schools, TV shows, popular music, and advertisements, began affecting the canonization process, which resulted in the reflection of their intentions and orientations that were out of tune with those of government-sponsored poetry circles in the canonization. This is how some poems of the 1980’s that were successfully canonized thanks to the firm support from government-sponsored poetry circles gained new meanings among the masses and thereby led the development of poetry canonization.
Second, the crisis of literature served as the most powerful motivation for research of canonization. The interest of Chinese academic circles in canonization was not to establish a standard in creation and criticism for the 21st century but to overcome the crisis of literary studies and reinvigorate it. Criticism and research are a way of giving a logical explanation of a certain literary work and making it a topic of public discussion. As the value of literature is increasingly questioned today, however, it becomes harder for criticism and research to draw an agreement in managing social discourse.
Third, the marginalization of literary studies rather extended the research of the canonization of Chinese poetry of 1980’s into cultural dimensions. Canonization studies discuss, among many, topics as follows: what kind of literary value a certain poet/poem have, how it is accepted by the masses, why it failed to be preserved or needs to be preserved, and so forth. This requires a discussion of a broader area in humanities ranging from poetry to culture, which enables poetry studies to extend into cultural studies. That is also the reason why many scholars facing the crisis of literary studies bring up the issue of canonization and raise the necessity to discuss it.
Fourth, literary-historical significance is not the only key element promoting canonization. In general, canonization is completed after historical and social examination in which seven kinds of subjects such as writers, critics, editors, publishers, literary historians, educators, readers interact with each other. Due to this tradition, canonization studies has given much consideration to literary-historical significance. In China, however, it is inevitable to consider politics not only for poetry creation but also for literary historiography, which means that canonization can be driven by what is excluded from literary histories. The suspension of Today, which has been neglected in literary histories but served as the cornerstone of the canonization of Chinese poetry of the 1980’s, is a good example. In contrast, some incidents that drew attention from literary historians did not directly lead to canonization. the debate on Misty Poetry is the classic case.
In the next chapter, this dissertation summarizes the characteristics of the canonization of Chinese poets of the 1980’s as follows: among many poets of this period, Bei Dao, Shu Ting, and Hai Zi have been studied the most. Along with the poems of so-called canonized poets, the dissertation reviews their interviews, awards, works in language and literature textbooks, and popular acceptance.
Bei Dao, who led the publication of Today, was an iconic poet for young readers of the 1980’s. His life as an exile since 1989, however, brought about the distinctive canonization which draws global attention and, at the same time, forces oblivion in China. He won back his place by himself as a cultural hero not by canonization based on literary-historical evaluations but by his written interview published in 2006. Ironically, however, this made him stuck in the 1980’s merely as the cultural symbol of the time.
Shu Ting was canonized by her poems included in language and literature textbooks for middle and high school students. This was already predicted in the 1980’s when she was well received by critics and won poetry awards. But her “To the Oak Tree,” which is included in textbooks, is often read in the way that selectively emphasizes only part of the work and, therefore, far from the author’s intention at the point of creation. in the late 1970’s, Shu Ting’s “love” was not only limited to the matter of romantic relationship or eros but also related to the matter of resistance against the times and of modernity. But the school curriculum has changed the poem into an exemplar of a healthy view of love for students.
Hai Zi is the only third-generation poet who has been canonized. His immortal soul has lived many afterlives as a symbol of the death of the intellectual and the time in the 1990’s, a textbook poet in the early 21st century, and a stimulator of socio-economic desires in popular song lyrics and advertising phrases today. His cultural significance in contemporary Chinese literary history makes his status even higher than that of Bei Dao and Shu Ting. This exceptional case was brought about by his literary achievement. In other words it is resulted from his quest to poeticize fundamental themes of human history without going along the current of the times. The canonization of Hai Zi poems began in non-governmental areas. But this non-governmental areas of his poems undergoes changes as they are consumed in the cultural sphere. Misread by the public, Hai Zi’s poems have rather gained new meanings and become popular. This is where his poems encounter a unusual situation?the coincidence of canonization and decanonization.
Lastly, this dissertation also tries to identify the difference between canonized poets and non-canonized poets and figure out why the latter fails to be canonized. Their experimental, unconventional, and anti-cultural character, which polarized readers’ reaction and affected their reputation, made it hard to canonize them.
As discussed above, this dissertation examines the canonization of Chinese poetry of the 1980’s since the 1990’s to understand its objective, characteristics, and the difference between individual poets’ cases in relation to the lives of Chinese people in the 21st century. This dissertation also aims to provide the big picture of the canonization of Chinese poetry of the 1980’s by including the analysis of the exclusion of third-generation poems from the canonization. Admittedly, However, my attempt to approach canonized poets/poems and non-canonized poets/poems from a balanced perspective remains at a rudimentary level. Such limits can hopefully be overcome in future work.
