I employ state’s enactment of the constituency statutes as exogenous shocks to the stakeholder orientation and examine the relation between stakeholder orientation and trade credit. Using a difference-in-difference methodology, I find that supplier firms affected by the constituency statutes increase their trade credit provision to their customers. I further find that this relationship is more pronounced for suppliers with lower customer concentration, suggesting that minor customers benefit more from suppliers’ extended trade credit than major customers do. I support this argument by showing that the positive association between customer concentration and trade credit is attenuated after the adoption of the constituency statutes. Further analyses show that trade credit is related with increase in market share, and shift in the customer concentration of the affected firms.
