Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify the effects of the nursing work environment and the infection control knowledge on infection control performance among general hospital nurses.
Methods: This study used a descriptive research design. The data were collected from September 13, 2021 to October 1, 2021. A total of 138 nurses from four general hospitals located in G and P cities participated in this study. The collected data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson''s Correlation Coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression using SPSS Win 26.0 program.
Results: The mean score of nursing work environment was 2.53±0.33 points out of 4, and the infection control knowledge was an average of 21.41±1.92 points out of 25, and the infection control performance was an average of 4.62±0.40 points out of 5. Infection control performance had a positive correlation with nursing work environment and knowledge, but there was no clear correlation between nursing work environment and knowledge. In the final analysis, the variables that had the greatest influence on infection control performance were the nursing work environment (β=.32, p<.001), working department (β=.19, p=.014), and knowledge (β=.19, p=.016).
Conclusion: This study showed that nurses with the better nursing work environment, working in general department, and more infection control knowledge had the higher the infection control performance. Therefore, in order to improve infection control performance, it is necessary to improve the nursing environment condition and to develop practical education programs for widening infection control knowledge.
