Argumentative writing is effective for enhancing students’ educational achievement, yet practical constraints often prevent teachers from offering immediate, personalized feedback. Although chatbots powered by large language models have recently emerged as potential tools to mitigate these limitations, concerns have been raised regarding issues such as overreliance and deceit stemming from their improper use. This study investigated student-chatbot interactions through the lens of ICAP-based engagement levels. Utilizing a web-based writing platform and interviews, it examined students’ intents and engagement goals during argumentative writing, as well as how students’ self-regulated learning capabilities influence these interactions. The findings revealed 15 intents in students’ argumentative writing, which were then classified into 5 engagement goals aligned with engagement levels. Notably, high self-regulated learning capabilities students'' employed a broader range of intents compared to their low self-regulated learning capabilities students, and certain active engagement goals appeared significantly more frequently among these high self-regulated learning capabilities students. By identifying students’ intrinsic intents and engagement goals, this study proposes timely and strategic support measures tailored to individual engagement levels. Ultimately, these insights are expected to alleviate teachers’ workload and contribute to establishing a learner-centered, efficient educational environment.
