또한 태연의 <To. X>는 “Gonna block you…”

This study begins from the observation that, in Korean popular song lyrics, even when profanity is not explicitly written, phonologically similar expressions that are perceived as profanity during listening recur repeatedly. In particular, even under broadcasting and distribution environments in which profanity and vulgar language are regulated, creators have employed strategies that maintain the emotional intensity and aggressiveness associated with profanity by making use of the realized forms of pronunciation and prosodic conditions, while staying within the bounds of orthographic norms. Accordingly, this study aims to examine, first, how profanity is not stated at the level of “writing” yet is reconstructed at the level of “pronunciation” second, how Korean phonological phenomena and standard pronunciation norms are mobilized as resources in that process and third, how such indirect expressions form tensions between the lyrics review system and audience perception, and what functions and effects they produce, in an integrated manner.
The research method was organized in three stages. First, targeting Korean popular songs released from 2010 to 2024, the study conducted direct listening based on major streaming platforms and extracted, at the first stage, lyric segments in which particular pronunciations could be heard as similar to profanity during singing. Second, through analyses of media reports and online communities, the study additionally collected cases that had become socially controversial or had been pointed out as issues in review processes, thereby correcting the subjectivity that can arise from selection based on the researcher’s listening and securing materials on social perception. Third, for the selected segments, the study described phonologically the differences between orthography and pronunciation with reference to standard pronunciation norms, and examined together how musical performance factors such as rhythm and stress in the actual recordings affect the realization of pronunciation and auditory perception. In addition, artwork elements were examined in parallel to analyze the interaction between phonetic realization and visual stimuli, and lyrics and musical notation were inserted together to present clearly the rhythmic conditions of each case, while not aiming at harmonic or arrangement analysis.
In the theoretical discussion, in order to understand the phenomenon of indirect profanity in popular song lyrics as a linguistic practice arising from the gap between letters and sound, the study reviewed the basic concepts of phonology and how standard pronunciation norms regulate the relationship between written language and spoken language. In addition, profanity was treated not as mere vulgar language but as a speech act that performs multiple functions such as emotional expression, resistance, and satire and, on the premise that the lyrics review system has primarily operated as text-centered regulation, the study discussed what blind spots arise at the level of pronunciation realization when the unit of regulation remains confined to “written words.” This background review provides the basis for explaining that indirect profanity cannot be reduced to the technical purpose of “avoiding banned words,” but rather constitutes an expressive strategy that produces meaning effects within genre characteristics and reception environments.
For the empirical analysis, the study first reclassified profanity expressions into three types—direct profanity, modified profanity, and metaphorical/symbolic profanity—and examined the functions and effects performed by each type. Whereas direct profanity reveals taboo words on the surface and directly conveys emotional outburst and aggressiveness, modified profanity and metaphorical/symbolic profanity presuppose the audience’s participation in that they lower the explicit level in writing while being designed for listeners to notice the profanity during listening. In this process, profanity expressions perform the function of compressively expressing strong emotions, the function of resistance and liberation against norms, authority, and external gaze, and the satirical function of targeting an object through exaggeration and wordplay furthermore, they strengthen a song’s character and narrative and lead to the effect of increasing the density of the listening experience.
Following this, Chapter IV analyzed cases along three axes “phoneme substitution”, “phoneme omission and modification” and “standard pronunciation based” and presented the concrete mechanisms through which indirect profanity is realized in actual recordings. First, phoneme substitution is a strategy that, while maintaining sentence frames in which profanity frequently appears, replaces particular syllables and initial consonants so as to leave a neutral meaning in writing while enabling the listener to reconstruct the place of profanity in listening. In Jeon Somi <XOXO>, the segment “반쪽 같은 소리… / 나쁜 연…” forms sounds presupposing “좆 같은 소리” and “나쁜 년,” respectively, through pronunciation treatment and initial-consonant replacement, thereby foregrounding harsh emotions while still complying with orthographic norms. In addition, in Taeyeon <To.X>, in the line “Gonna block you…,” “block” is auditorily perceived as similar to the English profanity “fuck” this case shows the point at which an English expression is transformed into profane listening within the context of Korean popular songs, and suggests that, while at the level of writing it signifies blocking and severance, at the level of listening profane aggressiveness may overlap within the same segment.
Second, phoneme omission and modification is a strategy in which, under conditions of speech rate, rhythm, and continuous utterance, particular syllables are weakened and contracted or word boundaries become blurred, thereby foregrounding the sound value of profanity. In PLAVE <버추얼 아이돌>, the segment “Shake it 흔들어” is analyzed as implementing the effect of profanity through phoneme omission and modification without directly violating review regulations, and, combined with the context of pushing back against external criticism, linguistic resistance and play operate together. Teen Top <미치겠어> likewise maintains the intensity of emotion by creating room for perception as profanity through the contraction and modification of “지옥같아” within a fast progression, in combination with a narrative that expresses the breakdown of love and extreme emotions. Furthermore, in BOBBY <RocKstaR>, after selecting an orthographically safe form such as “for,” a method is observed in which, during singing, vowels and consonants are contracted and modified so as to approach the phonological form of particular profanity this can be interpreted as a type that presupposes profanity as an underlying form, adjusts the written form in consideration of the broadcasting environment, and then achieves the target effect in phonetic realization.
Third, standard pronunciation–based cases are strategies that, rather than intentionally changing or deleting consonants and vowels, maintain normal orthography while making use of conditions of pronunciation realization such as connected speech, stress placement, and the weakening of word boundaries to evoke profane meaning. Pocket Girls’ <쓸애기> is presented as a representative case in which the way standard pronunciation is produced creates a profane meaning effect, and the key point is that, although it is read as everyday vocabulary at the level of writing, it is designed to overlap with a derogatory term at the level of pronunciation. In addition, PSY <I LUV IT> maintains expressions such as “시방” and “씨 발라먹어” which may appear harmless on the surface or be framed as idiomatic, while realizing profanity effects more overtly through boundary weakening and stress in the process of utterance this represents a typical case of meaning formation through pronunciation realization that is difficult for text-based review to capture.
Based on the foregoing analysis, indirect profanity based on phonological similarity is not a single technique rather, it is realized across different levels, including, first, a method that utilizes phonological forms produced by pronunciation norms second, a method that replaces syllables and phonemes to hide the position of profanity and third, a method that induces omission and contraction under conditions of rhythm, speed, and stress. In actual listening contexts, musical performance and audiovisual elements combine to reinforce the impression of profanity. In particular, an important characteristic emphasized by this study is that even when such indirect expressions are heard in a form perceived as profanity, the lyrical context does not abruptly collapse and tends to be accepted naturally within the discourse.
That is, while using vocabulary whose written meaning is neutral or open to multiple interpretations, the lyrics are designed so that, in listening, a profane phonological form overlaps, and this does not damage the song’s emotions and narrative but instead aligns smoothly with the emotional direction the song pursues, such as defiance, mockery, liberation, and exaggerated self-display. In this respect, indirect profanity is not merely a workaround to evade review it functions as a communication strategy that provides listeners with the pleasure of noticing and encourages active interpretive participation, and thus needs to be understood as a product of interaction among creators, the review system, and audiences.
The significance of this study is, first, that it foregrounds auditory recognition of profanity as a central topic by moving beyond approaches that judge profanity expressions only in terms of their presence or absence in writing, and by analyzing them from a multilayered perspective that includes pronunciation, speech, and musical performance. Second, it combines phonology and standard pronunciation norms with lyrics research, presents an explanatory framework for how indirect profanity repeatedly becomes established under certain phonological phenomena and rhythmic conditions, and concretizes its operating principles through case analyses. Third, it provides a basis for discussion that enables a more refined understanding of the tension among freedom of expression, youth protection, and language ethics, by examining, from the perspective of actual reception processes, the blind spots that arise when the lyrics review system operates as text-centered regulation.
Meanwhile, due to methodological limitations, this study excluded from analysis phenomena that require separate perspectives, such as linguistic distance, code-switching, and cultural insensitivity, and it was not able to address in depth the everyday functional dimensions of profanity itself. In future research, it will be necessary to compare empirically differences in reception by genre, generation, and platform, and to verify quantitatively the conditions of pronunciation perceived as profanity through listener experiments or large-scale lyrics materials, thereby more precisely identifying the sociolinguistic significance and aesthetic functions of indirect profanity expressions.
