This study examines how Koreans process discourse when subject and object nominals and their post-nominal particles are or are not overtly expressed. It reports several tendencies regarding the presence and absence of subjects, objects, and their post-nominal particles, and it argues that their appearance and non-appearance in actual discourse are closely related to discourse context available to the interlocutors at the time of processing the given utterance. It also claims that both interlocutors strategically use the available discourse contexts to make the communication between them successful. Finally, this study suggests a new way of looking at the well-addressed phenomenon of the case marker ellipsis and zero anaphora in colloquial Korean. That is, subject and object nominals are overtly expressed only when they are necessary instead of saying that they are not expressed explicitly or they are omitted when unnecessary.
