This study is a study on the development direction of action cheerleading, which was started on the basis of the cheering culture of Korean universities before and after 1965. The purpose of this study is to find out the perception, sports value and development constraints of college students and field-oriented experts who are participating in physical activities of action cheerleading, to seek the direction of development. For the purpose of the study, a qualitative study was conducted, and the subjects of the study were 10 student members and 10 field-oriented leaders with a lot of professional knowledge and activity experience among Korean university cheerleaders. As for the regions, nine regions were selected and proceeded: Gangwon, Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi, Busan, Gyeongbuk, Jeonbuk, Chungbuk, and Chungnam. As for the sampling method, a semi-structured in-depth interview was conducted using purposeful sampling, which is a nonprobability sampling method. The semi-structured questions were modified and supplemented through a pilot test. The harmonized questions were revised and supplemented through a pilot test. The interview contents were transcribed and triangulated, and the results were derived by reading them several times and classifying common contents.
The results of the study are as follows: First, the common perceptions of university students and experts were ‘enjoyable’, ‘exciting’, and ‘physical health’. Second, the common sports values of university students and experts were ‘cooperation’, ‘cohesion’, and ‘partnership" as team sports. Second, exclude of middle and high school clubs, the development constraints recognized by both college students and experts are ‘lack of awareness, sports facilities for life, central association capacity, leader training and leadership capacity, events and publicity. Third, it was found that, the direction of development of action cheerleading in Korea were recognized by both college students and experts ‘Korean Sports Association"s life sports’, ‘Central Association"s capacity building’, ‘professional leader training and program development’, ‘incorporation into sports club events’, ‘Teacher training transfer’ and ‘events and publicity’.
