IEEE 802.11 DCF, based on CSMA/CA with random backoff, performs well with few stations (STAs) but suffers rapidly rising collision probability and degraded performance as contention increases. This paper proposes a hybrid MAC scheme that adaptively switches modes according to congestion. When the number of active STAs n is at or below a threshold Nth, the original DCF is used; when n exceeds Nth, the Access Point piggybacks the next STA’s identifier onto the ACK frame, switching to collision-free sequential polling. Extending Bianchi[1]’s methodology, this study models the DCF mode via a Markov chain and the polling mode via a renewal-reward process, deriving the saturation throughput and the optimal Nth. The analysis shows the proposed scheme significantly improves throughput over conventional DCF by reducing collisions in dense environments.
