초록·키워드
This study examines the academic development and main characteristics of the ideas on history education developed by Kang Woo-chul, a first-generation history education researcher in Korea. Trained in academic history under professional historians, Kang established the aims, content, curriculum, textbooks, and teaching methods of history education as distinctive subjects of research. Through his research and active participation in academic societies, curriculum development, and textbook compilation, he contributed significantly to the establishment of history education in post-liberation Korea. He distinguished history education from history as an academic discipline and sought to define its unique educational role within social studies. His ideas centered on the present relevance and practical significance of history, leading him to emphasize inquiry-based learning, and the organization of historical content around modern history. From the 1970s onward, he also placed greater emphasis on historical consciousness and value-oriented education.
At the same time, his emphasis on the present relevance and practical significance of history education—while providing a foundation for its autonomy as an educational field—also created a conduit for aligning history education with broader national objectives. Kang actively participated in the Park Chung-hee administration’s efforts in the 1970s to strengthen national history education. In this context, he emphasized national identity and an independent stance on national security, while supporting the role of history education in reinforcing the legitimacy of the Yushin regime. His efforts to connect history education with contemporary life and practical concerns thus reveal both the educational possibilities of his approach and its potential for mobilization in pursuit of political objectives.
